ISDT 1952 – Austria

Page under construction always…..

Introduction

This year saw the 27th ISDT visiting Bad Aussee, Austria 18 – 23 September. This was the first time officially with the event was attributed to Austria. The event had swung into Austria a few times in the past and was most notably the home of infamous ISDT of 1939 which became a German event after the German Third Reich take over of Austria. Based in Salzburg in 1939 it visited Bad Aussee on Day 2, Gross Glockner on day 3.

We needed outside help again as we only had a handful of press cuttings to use for this 27th ISDT round.  Located in Austria, based at Bad Aussee, where 38 of the highest Alpine Passes can be found, brought massive efforts from the 6 countries with 260 riders competing.  After Arthur Williams’s most determined & helpful effort ULRICH ZIPPERLEN came forward with the correct desciption of the picture:

[I could supply copies of the Maico brochures and pictures for the site.   It is so nice when you become corrected to bring facts to life, thanks to all again.]

Ace searcher & researcher Dave Martin found this badge, Originally Taff writes he was unsure whether original old or modern, any ideas?. However racing to our rescue was Andreas Holthaus who adds more in his comment below,  this was an annual event taking place near Wüppertal, first held on the 24th August in the year of the badge .

BSA Win Trophy For Year’s Best Observed Performance

The BSA team— Brian Martin, Fred Rist, Bert Perrigo (team manager) and Norman Vanhouse with the Maudes trophy awarded for their 4,958 miles officially observed road test and participation in the International Six-Days Trial.

THE Auto Cycle Union of Great Britain has awarded the Maudes trophy to BSA for the most meritorious observed motor cycling performance of the year. Three stock model BSA Star Twins were selected by the official ACU observer, Mr. J. McNulty from a batch of 35 passing through the finishing department of the BSA works early in September. These machines were marked with special paint and the engine and components sealed. From then on the machines were under the direct supervision of the observer unless he impounded them under lock and key with his own personal seal on the door. On September 7 the three machines, ridden by prominent British riders Fred Rist, Norman Vanhouse and Brian Martin left Birmingham accompanied by Mr. McNulty. Their route was to take them through nine countries. From September 18 to 23 they were in the International Six-Days’ Trial through the Austrian provinces of Styria and Carinthia in the British zone, and Salzburg and Upper Austria in the US zone. Competition from top rank Continental riders and machines was met, but, despite the rigors of the course and bad weather, each was awarded a gold medal for having covered the course without loss of marks. After the International Six-Days’ Trial the machines continued their road test, passing through Germany, Denmark and Sweden to the finishing point at Oslo on September 30. Mr. McNulty made a detailed report of his observations to the ACU in which lie included a record of every attention the machines had received, and later the ACU issued a certificate of performance. The Maudes trophy was first introduced by the ACU in 1923 and was last awarded in 1939. On October 9 this year the ACU competitions committee considered the report of their observer on the BSA performance and made the new award.

Maybe I can help about the badge “1. Schwelmer Geländekurs Rund um Kuelchen 1952”.
This was a local event at Schwelm (close to my hometown Wuppertal), firstly held on August 24th, 1952. (Some weeks before the ISDT)

I cannot find any evidence, that the Czech ISDT team did participate in this event (the only information I could find about this event is in the book “1945 bis 1960-Motorradrennen im Rheinland” by Heinrich Effertz), neither the text nor the winners lists show Czech entrants.

Anyhow, there are rumors, that they had been there for “training purpose” and took part out of ranking, but did impress the spectators by their performance.
This is, at least, what an old man at the bar told a friend, when making a pause with his offroad bike at a pub at Kuelchen, which is a small village near Schwelm.

Why such an unimportant event? Assumption is, that it could disguise the real reason, which might have been to get outside the iron curtain and get the possibility to buy motorcycle parts unavailable at home (The region around Schwelm was full of automotive part suppliers during the early 50s).

Once found the information at the internet (unfortunately didn’t save the link), that the team manager tried to get shock absorbers from the company “Hemscheidt”, who at that time produced the shocks for the NSU Max 250, but the Czech team manager didn’t get them, despite a lot of booze ;o))

So, as it mostly remains speculation, I cannot give a proven answer, but this might explain, why a Czech ISDT rider can be seen on a badge from a local event.

    Regards
    Andreas

I have the Gold medal won by Sgt R Rhodes of the 1952 Army team.

I used to work with him in Andover Hants UK in the 1980’s.

He gave me his medal as I was doing clubman events at Enduro in Wales , at that time. He gave the medal to me as he had no one in his family who was interested.

I would like to pass this medal and box on to you so that we can continue the history of this event and those Hard competitors.

Will you kindly email me about this. Thank you

    • Hi Paul thank you so much for this generous offer. I will certainly be sure that Sgt Rhodes story is saved and kept and hopefully his family will one day come back to find out more.
