ISDT 1937, the Motor Cycle

The Speedtracktales Archive has seen the arrival of two original issues of ‘the Motor Cycle‘ from 22nd and 29th ISDT which will be covered by two separate reports. This one covers the full report issue of the 22 July 1937.

In the issue editorial the merits of the organisation of the event , the location and requirements for such events are raised by the Magazine’s editor. This discussion was not new nor did it stop about the ability of Britain to deliver an ISDT event that met the increasing demand for more technical courses better suited to the modern lightweight motorbikes that the British Motorcycle Industry were….. not yet producing!!

Britain’s Success in the International Six Days Trial: The A.C.U. ‘s Handling of a Very Difficult Task

Once again a thrilling road race has decided the destiny of the International Trophy. In the high-speed test at Donington that concluded last week’s lnternational Six Days Trial two Trophy team started level with not a point lost – those of Germany and Great Britain – and the question was which team would gain the larger number of seconds over its set schedule. As will be seen from the description of the event on pages 112-122 Britain won by the narrow margin of ten seconds and thus retain the International Trophy.

ISDE 2013, Programme

We will not be forgetting that as in 2013 we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first ISDT held in Carlisle, England that this year Italy will be the host nation for the ISDE this year in Sardinia starting 30 September.

The organisers have kindly posted on line via issuu.com the official programme as a full colour electronic document which not only provides helpful route maps, lists of entrants and teams but a lot of background to past ISDT events with it being the 100th year as well as a complete list up to date of International Trophy / World Trophy winners for every year the event was held.

ISDT 1953, Medals, results

The FIM retains a significant collection of ISDT materials the most important of which is the official result set. It is an unavoidable reality that with only 1 original if something were to happen the results may be lost and this has happened to the results of the 1953 and 1954 ISDT.

To British ISDT Historians this is something of a dilemma as 1953 saw the last year the International Trophy was retained by the British Team which even today remains the nation who has held the trophy on the most occasions. In the absence of official results we were offered by our Euro contributor a scanned article from the Austrian edition of Motorrad magazine that provided the final results for every entrant and so as a service to our readers we enclose these results as an image and downloadable pdf to provide opportunity to analyse the results for this important year.

ISDT 1954, results

It came as a bit of a shock to realise that this important ISDT is missing a vital component. The Official Results sheet is missing .. or nobody can trace a copy. Initial Enquiries of the British governing body the Auto Cycle Union drew a blank and an approach to the FIM recovered advice this set had gone missing. It has often seemed strange to me that Taff Isaac’s original Speedtracktales web site collection of images I had collected includes a photo of the original cover of the ISDT 1954 results but he has no idea who supplied this photo, where it was or how I could get hold of them.

In the meantime to discover a full list of entrants check this sheet Start sheet ISDT 1954

Image of Cover of Original Stewards report with results for ISDT 1954

As it is highly likely a copy of this document still sits in a ISDT collectors  stash who seeing this might be prompted to quickly scan or photocopy a set and pass them onto Speedtracktales.

In the meantime I have been able, with the assistance of my great freind ‘STB’ to pull together a results sheet for the riders who finished the ISDT and the overall event statistics and major trophy and award winners.

This data has come from the original event reports from 1954 in ‘the Motor Cycle’ and Austrian ‘Motorrad’ magazine reports. UNfortunately the individual rider details are sparse we have no rider plate numbers nor do we have any details on those riders who did not finish the event. My final plea is for anyone who can help fill the information gap on the 1954 event by supplying the official results.

In the mean time here is my prepared copy of the 1954 results.. enjoy!!!

We are again indebted to our Euro contributor ‘STB’ who has obtained from the FIM the official results for the ISDT of 1974

The above picture is of Jim Hollander as US rider on what looked a futuristic design with Disc brakes, Mag Alloy Wheels, and Automatic Transmission. They even produced 2 wheel drive farm bikes all started by a pull cord like a lawnmower.

Book, ISDT 1968

Speedtracktales has been aware for a while of an Italian team hoping to prepare a sequel book to the excellent pictorial History of the ISDT1970 by Javier Benito Aguado. The result is ISDT1968, by Roberto Biza and Marcello Grigorov which will go on sale to coincide with the ISDE 2013 in Sardinia.

Following the precedent and style of Javier Benito’s book “ISDT1970”, this book tells the story of the International Six-Days Trial of 1968, based at San Pellegrino Terme, Italy.

1973, ISDT, USA

The ISDT in 1973 took its first of many subsequent trips out of Europe for the first time.  This time to the USA which was beginning to be the place that the name Enduro was being coined for the sport and was in many way the driving force for a development of the sport as an extension of a wider enjoyment of riding natural off road terrain than as purely a discipline of Motor Sport as practised in Europe. With Trail Riding being a pastime enjoyed by many the wealth of America was driving a market seeking and expecting technology as getting better by the year.

Although unable to pull off the win of the Trophy the US team including ‘King Dick’ Burleson were able to use the home advantage to be sure of the win in the Silver Vase. Leading the Manufacturer’s award were Zundapp to be followed by three works Jawa teams from Czechoslovakia. Leading club team was Sweden’s SMK Eskjo with Sweden also taking 2nd and 3rd in this award.

Review: ISDT and the British Army in Wales

The British Army’s presence has been one of prominence in the UK enduro scene since as long as I (new editor) became involved in it since in the late 70’s. At that time Service teams were both prominent with a long legacy of support for the sport including help for non service participants, certainly since the 1930’s. Not only did the service teams take part in events but without access to the British Army’s greatest training areas in the Brecon Beacons National Park it may have been difficult for anyone to have organised the several ISDT events that took place in Wales. The British Army Motoring Association has overseen motorsport within the army since 1960.

I even recall being told that when British Parliament introduced legislation limiting participants in road going motorsport events to 180. As a result of British Army interventions to government, both the ISDT and the Welsh Two Day Trial were given exemptions because of their importance in the Service training regimes so that they were able to get sufficient entries for service teams without it being at the expense of civilian competitors.

ISDT 1960: From a rider’s viewpoint – Ken Heanes

ISDT 1960, Ken Heanes, trophy team

The ISDT 1960 ended in much controversy after extremely hard ground conditions created a controversial result which then changed on appeal to become even more controversial. The going was considered hard for many with many hills so steep they were full of stranded riders. On the other hand it was the event which saw the introduction of the daily special test based on off road going which now is a main feature in the event to decide who the daily winners will be.

“ISDT Seen from the Saddle”

In an article for Motor Cycling 6 October 1960 Ken Heanes provided a insight into the event from a British Trophy team riders point of view that is of great interest to anyone with a deep interest into the event and politics of racing.

From the pen of Ken Heanes…

PLENTY of printers’ ink has already flowed through the presses, fed by on the- spot reporters from the I.S.D.T., and plenty more will probably be needed to cope with the criticisms of spectators and armchair strategists. But how did the-man-in-the-saddle see it? Last week Norman Sharpe went down to Fleet, Hants., to talk to Ken Heanes, the most experienced of all this year’s British teamsters, who has amassed three “golds” and a near-miss .. sliver” since he took part in his first International exactly 10 years ago when he was just 16. This is his report:
