The Triumph Tiger 100 offered here was ridden by Roy Peplow in the 1966 International Six Days Trial (ISDT). A works rider for the Triumph factory, Roy Peplow was a member of Great Britain’s Trophy team in the ’66 ISDT, held that year in Sweden. He is perhaps best known for his stunning overall victory in the 1959 Scottish Six Days Trial riding a 199cc Triumph Tiger Cub, a landmark victory that demonstrated the emerging capabilities of lightweight machines and sounded the death knell for the previously dominant heavyweight four-strokes.Great Britain was represented at the ’66 ISDT by some of this country’s finest off-road exponents: the remainder of the Trophy team comprising Johnny Giles, Arthur Lampkin, Ken Heanes, Ray Sayer and Sammy Miller. Riding ‘HUE 252D’, Roy Peplow won a Gold Medal, as did every one of his team mates, helping Great Britain to finish second overall behind East Germany, which celebrated its fourth consecutive victory in the Trophy competition. GB and East Germany were the only Trophy teams to remain un-penalised at the finish.Some time after the event the Triumph was sold to fellow team member, Ken Heanes, the Hampshire-based rider and motorcycle dealer, who enjoyed a lengthy and highly successful ISDT career and would go on to manage the British team in the 1970s following his retirement from the sport. The accompanying original logbook records the Triumph Engineering Co Ltd as first owner and Ken Heanes Ltd as ‘1st Change’, the latter entry being stamped September 1969. In September 1970 the Triumph was sold to its next owner, Max King, of Dorchester (the BBC news reporter) and in July 1972 passed into the ownership of a Christopher Brierley, of London SE12. Mr Brierley is listed as owner in the accompanying continuation logbook, which records the current vendor as ‘1st Change’, dated April 1974.The current owner had seen ‘HUE 252D’ advertised in the local newspaper as a ‘cross-country Triumph’ and as soon as he saw the machine recognised it as something very special. He bought the machine and contacted Ken Heanes, who wrote back confirming the Triumph’s provenance and offering to repurchase it should the owner ever decide to sell. Ken Heanes’ letter is on file and the machine also comes with old/current Swansea V5/V5C documents and SORN.Since its acquisition the ex-Peplow Triumph has been maintained regularly by the vendor, covering only a handful of miles annually as confirmed by expired MoTs on file dating back to the early 1990s. Last MoT’d to October 2008, it has covered only 12,600-or-so miles from new and is presented in generally good, original condition. Ex-works competition motorcycles with ISDT credentials are offered for sale only rarely and are highly sought after by collectors. ‘HUE 252D’ represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one that has the extra cachet of being a Gold Medal-winner at the ‘Olympics of Motorcycling’, ridden by one of this country’s foremost off-road stars of the day.
