The famous Lampkin dynasty of off-road stars will be known to nearly all readers of this blog, all of them famous far beyond their home in Yorkshire. The family also has connections over the border in Lancashire.

Graham Lampkin is one of the less well known Lancashire Lampkins and a regular classic bike long distance trailer and in 2014 undertook a ‘there & back’ ride to Lerwick in Shetland on a favourite BSA to raise funds for Cancer Research.

On 24 May 2016 he is planning to head to Santander in Northern Spain by ferry from Plymouth then will head back home in Colne via the Picos de Europa, Pais Vasco and Rioja then crossing the Pyrenees  heading up France to cross the channel in Brittany. As much of the route as he can do will be off surfaced highways. Rather than choosing the soft option of taking along one of those plush BMW or KTM adventure trail bikes, he’s decided to go a bit ‘off-grid’ by taking a 500cc Royal Enfield he rebuilt himself along with Chris Nutter on an ex-WD BSA B40.

The ISDT restarted after the war and 1948 was the second year of the resurrection of the event with the British Trophy team victorious with Captain Allan Jeffries (600 Triumph), CN Rogers (350 Royal Enfield), Vic Brittain (350 Royal Enfield), Hugh Viney (500 AJS), and Jack Williams (500 Norton). I now have been lucky to set my hands on copies of both issues of ‘the Motor Cycle‘ covering the event which is featured in this blog on the event. However here is the course map for the ISDT 1948 which we hope to use to digitise a modern map for the original route.

“The story of the Royal Enfield in the International Six Days Trial 1948, 1949,1950, 1951, 1952, 1953” is the title of a palm of a hand sized original publication produced by Royal Enfield in 1953 that recently fell into our hands and is of such great interest we reproduce it here. Royal Enfield, who could boast not only great bikes but a factory team that contained some of the sports greatest factory riders of the time including Vic and Johnny Brittain as well as Jack Stocker show how their successful domination of the results sheet at the ISDT meant the commute to work was going to be a lot more successful on a Royal Enfield than it might be on a lesser qualified motor cycle.

More information is available on this speedtracktale page alas we do not appear to have any original images of it in action, or much on the 1955 ISDT for that matter s oif anybody can help out please do.

Apologies for the brevity of posts recently its a busy time of the year at Speedtracktales Towers at the moment with the annual peak of the cycle and enduro calendar causing me much distraction.

Alves, Jim Alves, Royal Enfield, Triumph, Velocette

With all the hoopla of Xmas, New Year and the acquisition of Jim Alves’s ISDT Gold Medal from 1953 I somewhat overshot publishing an article I had planned for 2nd January because it was the day after New Years Day in 1916 in Glastonbury that saw the arrival into the world of Percival Harold Alves.

To celebrate I am publishing in our Folks ‘n Motors section an article that was published in ‘the Motor Cycle’ of May 30th 1946 reviewing the career of Jim, as he was better known, at the published date in 1946. At 30 years old Jim had already had many of the best results possible in Britain and within the next 10 years would set his mark as one of the worlds best Trials riders and in particular as a British Trophy Team rider of the ISDT
