ISDT 1931

!931 was the first year that the ISDT visited Italy outright. Although other events had crossed into Italy before, by 1931 Italy had a good home Motorcycle Industry and the sport was popular and growing. The ISDT 1931 was the beginning of many visits to Italy

Luckily one of this site’s keenest supporters has found and scanned a copy of ‘the Motor Cycle‘ issues produced in the run up to and during the event which provide an excellent record of the 13th event of the ISDT which was based at Merano near Monza.

You can read this scanned copy, here at our issuu.com library

AJS, ISDT 1939

I was very pleased to find this email in my inbox recently and thought it would be good to share with those who may be interested or inspired to repeat a similar venture.

“I just wanted to tell you that you have created a fantastic website that is an inspiration to anyone interested in the ISDT.  Having studied your site myself and 2 friends have decided to go to Salzburg in July with our vintage motorcycles to follow some of the routes used in the 1939 ISDT.  I am hoping to take some before and after photos of our trip.

I thought you might be interested in a copy of the spreadsheet I have put together recording riders, motorcycles and registration numbers of the motorcyles they used.

I am currently restoring a 1939 AJS Model 26 which is the same as the motorcycle used by George Rowley in the 1939 event.  I have attached a couple of photos from your site and wondered if you might please be able to send me a higher resolution copy of these photos or perhaps put me in touch with whomever owns the original photos.”
The two images were these

Sidecars: A man with a chair – the age of the ISDT Motorcycle Combination

Sidecar

One of the great features of the ISDT for most of it’s history was the participation of the motorcycle sidecar. Our site’s visitors logs show riders like P Bradley with his Sunbeam outfit or Stuart Weycott and his Velocette remain a popular search engine query that brings a lot of visitors

Photo shows WS Waycott (596cc Velocette sc) making his brilliant, unassisted climb of Fron Bache ISDT 1938 (Speedtracktales Collection)

I was therefore very pleased when German reader Rainer Laidig sent me a copy of the guide he made to Sidecars in the ISDT 1951 – 1956. Although in German it contains many images, especially of British riders, that are wholly new to me as well as some of our own and its good to see our photos helping add to the knowledge of the world of this fantastic event and the amazing men and bikes and passengers too. Reginald and Denise Wagger – ISDT regulars 1949-53

There is little doubt that the ISDT is far far, in its reality of a motorcycle event, more than a picnic with a club motorcycle run thrown in for good measure. It has proven serious training for Britain and Germany’s Regular Army. The event did not earn the nickname in the 1930’s of Motorcycling’s Olympics without good reason, it broke bikes and men. It has always been hard and expensive to compete. But for all the great works riders with full factory support the event has maintained a healthy number of keen sporting motorcyclists willing to pay the price of taking part in such an arduous event on man and machine.

A few weeks ago we had a post from a reader who saw his parents photo on our 1952 event page. They were racing their outfit and were regular competitors. After an offer of a selection of family photos from the event I was pleased in this mornings e-mails to get a note and a link to download a treasure trove of an archive of photos from not only the ISDT but also the Welsh Two Day and many of the still classic long distance trials from the time. I will feature some of these in future blogs, especially those of the Welsh Two Day but for now I am happy to share the photos of Reg who rode both as a solo and then on a sidecar which for a few years was passengered by his wife Denise.

We do not yet have a results sheet for the 1949 event but Geoff, his son, tells us he thinks he won a Gold Medal.

1954 and 1955 ex works ISDT AJS spend retirement on warm dusty trails in Oz

AJS, Australia, Twin

Photo of

Photo of Les Sheehan’s 1954 AJS Twin and Hugh Viney’s works 1955 AJS Twin intended for the ISDT 1955 both alive and well in Australia (P Horton/Speedtracktales)

I was very pleased when Australian reader Patrick Horton, who has provided the most delightful photo we have above, made contact to say

“I own Hugh Viney’s 1955 ISDT AJS. He never got to compete in the 1955 event as he was knocked off the bike in Earls Court on the way to a selection meeting. It left him with a broken leg and a vacancy in the British team that was taken up by Gordon Jackson.”

Never resisting the opportunity to be cheeky I encouraged him for photographic proof and was even more surprised to get this reply

“Last weekend I went to visit the current owner of Les Sheehan’s 1954 AJS ISDT twin which is still in near-original condition. I had my 1955 machine with me and I have a photograph of both which I’d put up here but I can’t see a way to attach a photo to this comment. After seeing the owner I also went to visit Les Sheehan who lives nearby. There can’t be many ISDT riders of the ’50s left.

When Viney got knocked off his bike it was returned to the factory and sold to someone Jock West knew. The special bits were taken off and presumably put on the replacement bike ridden by Gordon Jackson. So bits of the bike photographed above originally belonged on my bike. Could I ask for them back??!!!!”

This amazing unexpected coincidence has not only revealed two of the ex ISDT AJS bikes from the mid fifties finally gave up the damp cold and emigrated to enjoy a happy retirement riding on the warm dusty trails of the outback of Australia but one of their riders, Les Sheehan, remains alive and well and living nearby… a heart warming tale for what is today a snowy day in North Wales. I for one must say to be able to wake up then start up either of those bikes and go out on a ride sans rain, cold, or barbour jacket under blue skies must make Patrick one of the luckiest persons I have ever come across. Here’s to hundreds of more miles of good riding to come Partick.

As we do not have any pictures of Les on the site, having looked him up on Google there was not much available but a request on an Australian Motorcycle site by his daughter Marilyn Quirk indicates he was the Western Australia Scrambles champ in 1956 so he must have emigrated shortly after the time of his ISDT appearance. I would be grateful for any offers of images of him and especially on this AJS.

The price of fame: Steve McQueen and the ISDT

Barbour, international, ISDT 1964, Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen‘s ‘star’ shines as brightly as ever these days, and the man is still relevant some 30 years after he left us. You will see his image on the pages of glossy lifestyle magazines promoting sunglasses, wristwatches, jackets and motorcars. Steve’s fan base is global and we know this from experience: when great McQueen property is offered, the telephones light up from Japan to Australia, from Britain to the United States.

While many of his contemporaries slip into obscurity, why does McQueen continue to hold our interest? Well, he starred in some of the most memorable movies of the Twentieth Century, he was an accomplished racecar driver, he was a great shot, he flew vintage aeroplanes, and he was also something of a hit with the ladies. McQueen could ride a motorcycle too; in fact he was bloody good — so good that together with pals Bud and Dave Ekins, Cliff Coleman and John Steen he represented the United States of America at the 1964 International Six Day Trials (ISDT).

the ISDT 1964 would take place in the Communist Eastern bloc during the height of the Cold War. On September 5, 1964 in a packed hall in Erfurt, East Germany complete with a large picture of Walter Ulbricht the then leader of the German Democratic Republic, McQueen — in what has been reported as one of the proudest moments of his life — carried the ‘Stars and Stripes’ for the US team at the opening ceremony.

I’ve got a box full of my old outdated racing licenses probably worth a grand total of £0.00 but Steve’s license a folded piece of card the size of a cigarette packet, Steve’s sold for US$ 42,700 …. the price and value of fame eh!

Alves, Jim Alves, Royal Enfield, Triumph, Velocette

With all the hoopla of Xmas, New Year and the acquisition of Jim Alves’s ISDT Gold Medal from 1953 I somewhat overshot publishing an article I had planned for 2nd January because it was the day after New Years Day in 1916 in Glastonbury that saw the arrival into the world of Percival Harold Alves.

To celebrate I am publishing in our Folks ‘n Motors section an article that was published in ‘the Motor Cycle’ of May 30th 1946 reviewing the career of Jim, as he was better known, at the published date in 1946. At 30 years old Jim had already had many of the best results possible in Britain and within the next 10 years would set his mark as one of the worlds best Trials riders and in particular as a British Trophy Team rider of the ISDT

Allt y Badi, Llangollen, North Wales

Back in 1933 the International Six Days Trial (ISDT) first visited Wales and in a report in the ‘Western Daily Press‘ of the event, the course was described as requiring competitors each day to ‘ride over the most difficult and dangerous roads in the British Isles‘ this was Britain between the wars with little need to travel to far off countries for excitement and adventure. The ISDT started in 1913 and much of its course followed tracks that in pictures appear they were made for farm carts yet, today, many of them are surfaced ‘A’ class roads.

Gallt y badi

Hyll, du, budr, yw Allt y Badi; – un serth,
Mae’n hawdd syrthio arni;
Pe syrthiwn ar ei serthni;
Yn ’sgyrion hollt â’i’m hesgyrn i.

The fact was the nation’s road network  had been a considered such a national disgrace in the 1800’s that it required a Parliamentary Commission to fix, this ultimately led to the decision when establishing the new County Councils in the mid 1800’s for them to take over managing main roads. By the 1927 Local Government Act, what roads were left being managed by the District and Parish Councils were passed over the the County Councils. This was at a time there was an increasing demand by the public for the metalling of highways with the increasingly popular Tar Macadam to provide a level all weather surface better suited to the needs of motor cars.

Not a problem then worrying the ISDT organisers, who knew that many of the rural roads were still unmade and which, occaisionally, might only be treated to heaps of crushed rock to fill up holes to ensure the carts full of farmer’s turnips could be safely wheeled to market towns for sale. The roads of the early ISDT years were sufficient for their intended purpose to test motorcycle reliability. Although some private land was available for events, with heavy bikes with little or no suspension the public road network, as it was then, was more than adequate for the job. Local communities were also keen to see the event come though their area, both for the people it bought in and the distraction from the daily norm it gave to those in rural areas long before the distraction of TV or radio became popular social barbiturates.

In the Heritage Highways features we will try to examine a bit more about Roads that hold a particular iconic legacy for the event. If you have a candidate highway let me know, this is the first edition which is the ‘Allt y Baddy’, near Llangollen, Denbighshire. The earliest written reference to the road is found in a poem published in 1878 by the Welsh poet Ioan Myllon which is as follows

Gallt y badi

Hyll, du, budr, yw Allt y Badi; – un serth,
Mae’n hawdd syrthio arni;
Pe syrthiwn ar ei serthni;
Yn ’sgyrion hollt â’i’m hesgyrn i.

in english it reads

Gallt y badi

Ugly, black, dirty is Allt y Badi – so steep
It’s easy to slip on her
If I fell on her steepness
Wholly splintered my bones would be
