This week ‘British Pathé‘ archive was officially released on Youtube. This famous news reel archive that would have been the main feature of cinema visits in the past includes short articles for news features of the time on the ISDT.
Not many seem to exist and I hope more are subsequently found and released

On our latest trawl of the internet mining resources I am certainly pleased to have found this short item of a newsreel produced by Movietone news. Apart from some fantastic footage of the entrants set in the vastness of the beautiful remote Welsh Countryside whilst friendly and keen locals look on supporting the riders. We also get to see the final speed test that took place at Donnington. More videos from this and other years can be viewed on our video gallery.

This previously unknown footage of the event held in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czechoslovakia from a Movietone News news reel has been located that adds to our knowledge of this event. There are more videos of this and other events available on our video gallery.

On a recent on-line material hunt we checked out the Associated Press media website following up on a haunch press images of the event may be found. Almost immediately we stumbled over a video clip labeled as ‘Poland International Trial’ watching the clip the first bike to pass by was a Matchless and a quick check about enabled us to put riders numbers and bikes together using the 1958 programme so we are pretty certain this is the 1958 ISDT held in Garmish Partenkirchen, West Germany in 1958 you can see other video clips of the event in our video gallery.

Whilst undertaking a recent trawl through the photo archive at Associated Press (AP) for old photos connected to the ISDT and its venues I found a couple of news reel clips which although not clearly labelled were of the ISDT. I have now added these to the video page but here is the video of the 1969 event held in Garmisch Parternkirchen, West Germany as it was then.

I recently had a chance to review a copy of what for many in the UK is unknown film footage of the ISDT. This video is available by internet order from Audi’s online shop in Germany.
Filmed for a patriotic German Audience it gives a good overview of the preperation for the event and scrutineering. You can’t avoid the ever present Nazi troop regalia as the German Army was heavily involved in running the event as well as competing. There are several shots of great British riders such as Marjorie Cottle fettling her Triumph in Sunday best as the Trophy Team Nortons. The other bikes are often NSU, a company part of Audi, and BMW’s . There are sections featuring the German great riders of the time, there is also a section where the German head of the motorcycle sport Adolf Huhnlein gives his presentation , presumably at the event opening, in a manner you may be similar to seeing many of the senior Nazi personalities in news reels of the time. THE urge to demonstrate in some practical fashion the advantages of one particular machine over its rival came very early in the life story of the motorcycle, and it was in 1903 that the newly formed Auto Cycle Union adopted the idea of a Six Days Reliability Trial involving a series of daily tests, the event to be run annually. When it became known that for the Eleventh Annual ACU Six Day Trial, in 1913, the Lake District was being considered as a venue, the ACU made contact with the two local club – Westmorland CC, and Cumberland County MCC – with a view to electing suitable hills.
