1955, Liverpool, Merseyside, Road Safety film, Victor Horsmans

One of the great pleasures working on this site is the occaisional random searches that turn up an ISDT hero when least expected. Following a hunch looking for a BMW video i stumbled on a Motorcycle Road Safety Film created by the Liverpool motorcycle dealers ‘Victor Horsmans’ being familiar with the streets of Liverpool but far too young to recall what they looked like in 1955, my curiosity got the better of me. After seeing a few very familiar landmarks the film introduced the characters taking part including the early 50’s ISDT hero Eric Wilson, who’s son recently found his way to our pages. Eric won a gold in the 1951 Italian ISDT on a 500 Norton staying clean all week, his name does not appear in our results of 1947, 1952 or 1955 so we will dig through our other records to find where the second ISDT Gold, that the film mentions, was won. Early on there is also an interesting footage of typical ISDT type going in one of the atmosphere clips the film uses to establish to the viewer the diversity of motorcycling. Feel free to add your own recollections or thoughts on this video by adding comments below.

Latest news release has just landed

January Press release.

TOURATECH CENTENNIAL RALLY NEWS

Britain’s biggest rally event is set for August. What has been termed as the Festival of the International Six Days Enduro is in fact a celebration of the hundred year history of the ISDT/ISDE. It will be the most important event in the UK off road rally calendar in 2013.

Touratech the World’s largest manufacturer of Adventure Touring equipment is backing the event and will be present at the Carlisle start and finish area.

The first ISDT, later changed to the ISDE, was held in Carlisle in August 1913, one hundred years later Carlisle welcomes rally competitors to the city centre start area for a four day event. There will be a three day forestry rally in the Kielder & Kershope forests with each day starting and finishing at Carlisle Castle. A celebration programme is being produced by Carlisle City Council which has recognised the importance of this event.

On the last day, which is exactly the same day of the month as the first day of the first ISDT, one hundred riders will ride the same course as the original first day. The Centennial Ride competitors will have lunch at Keswick where the old timers dined.

The Centennial Rally has classes for adventure, genuine trail, sports and classic ISDT/E type bikes. The course will be three days of forestry tracks, two days of which will be three laps of a challenging course, the other day will be a single one hundred mile lap, the longest rally lap in Britain. Total distance is around four hundred miles.

The Centennial Ride which follows the original one hundred and twenty mile gravel roads, now surfaced, will include machines and riders that have a connection with the history of the ISDT/E.

No celebration of this type would be complete without a get together and this will take place on the Saturday evening at the Swallow Lynton Hotel, where bargain price accommodation is available, the hotel is a short distance from the start and finish area.

There will be plenty to see near the start and finish arch where manufacturers and traders will have displays of their latest products. Further information is available at www.bigbikerallychallenge.co.uk where the regulations and entry form will shortly be posted. Go to touratechuk.co.uk for information or to request a catalogue.

With all the hoopla of Xmas, New Year and the acquisition of Jim Alves’s ISDT Gold Medal from 1953 I somewhat overshot publishing an article I had planned for 2nd January because it was the day after New Years Day in 1916 in Glastonbury that saw the arrival into the world of Percival Harold Alves.

To celebrate I am publishing in our Folks ‘n Motors section an article that was published in ‘the Motor Cycle’ of May 30th 1946 reviewing the career of Jim, as he was better known, at the published date in 1946. At 30 years old Jim had already had many of the best results possible in Britain and within the next 10 years would set his mark as one of the worlds best Trials riders and in particular as a British Trophy Team rider of the ISDT

An excellent book publiched by Veloce books written with great personal authority by Harry Woolridge who knew the bike thoroughly working in the development of the bike at the Triumph works at Meridan right through an into the Workers Cooperative years.

The bike was one of the mainstay items in the British arsenal of motorcycles which it used to dominate the pre 1970 ISDT and just about every detail there is to know is faithfully recorded in this book.

here is a list of the registrations of works Triumph Trophys that were prepared for the ISDT

News of a show in Telford this coming February featuring ISDT related memorabilia and bikes – dont miss it especially the following of interest to the history of the ISDT.

In 1975 the ISDT was run in the Isle of Man. The 6 man UK trophy team was, for the first time, to ride Jawas supplied by the uk importer Bickers, under the management of Ken Heanes and Chris Oliver. Ken and Gold medallist Dave Smith have now died whilst Ernie Page is now in America but at the Telford show the remaining team members Mick Bowers, Jon May, Dave Jeremiah and John Pease will meet up again for the first time in 3 decades. Dave Bickers will also be there and will be bringing along  two of the bikes actually used in the event. Chris Oliver and ISDT legend Arthur Browning will add to the entertainment as the team is interviewed on stage by compere Colin Dommett .

Latest news update from Dot Jones.

Details for the four day ‘Centennial Rally‘ are being finalised and the regulations will be available on line shortly. The response to these celebration events has been amazing with riders from across the world coming to the UK to help mark this landmark in off road motorcycle sport.

The first International Six Days Trial started in Carlisle, Cumbria, England on 18th August 1913 when one hundred and sixty one competitors tackled a one thousand mile course.

One hundred years later, 100 riders will ride the very same route as the first day of the first ISDT. On Sunday 18th August 2013 starting and finishing in Carlisle. Continue reading →

ISDT

The following post is from an article in a 1984 edition of Classic Motorcycle written by well known Lake District Historians Percy and Margaret Duffy, the prints coming from a collection of antique magic lantern slides:

Photo – With his 750cc Rudge Multi outfit, W.D.South corners at Tow Top in the 1912 One-Day Trial

THE urge to demonstrate in some practical fashion the advantages of one particular machine over its rival came very early in the life story of the motorcycle, and it was in 1903 that the newly formed Auto Cycle Union adopted the idea of a Six Days Reliability Trial involving a series of daily tests, the event to be run annually. When it became known that for the Eleventh Annual ACU Six Day Trial, in 1913, the Lake District was being considered as a venue, the ACU made contact with the two local club – Westmorland CC, and Cumberland County MCC – with a view to electing suitable hills.

Hot on the heels of our announcement for the Launch of a campaign to create events to commemorate the centenary of the ISDT next year, which first took place in August 1913, has taken a major step with news just in from Jim Jones, one of the bedrocks of the Enduro and  Big Bike Rallye scene in the UK.

The event will cover four days and on one day will follow the original route of day 1 of the first ISDT. There will be classes for the usual big trail bikes and also off orad bikes that are road legal and classes for classic bikes. The event has the support of the Carlisle City Council who are producing a commemorative program and I am sure if any readers of this have any memorabilia of the first ISDT then I am sure they would like to be able to feature it. You can enter as a solo or in a team of three for motorcycle clubs or trade teams.

Event details supplied by Organiser:

The Centennial Rally is to be held over four days in Cumbria, England from 15th to 18th August 2013.

With the 100th anniversary of the holding of the first International Six Day Trial less than 1 year away, as the event was hosted by the ACU in England before becoming one of the most truly international of top class motorcycle events. Which, with the toughness of the six days of effort quickly saw the event being likened to the ‘Olympics of Motorcycling’ a name that has stuck with it ever since as it has been hosted on most of the worlds continents.

1913, Carlisle, Cumberland, Cumbria, Lake District

As the century of ISDT approaches I would like to launch an appeal to gather as much of the lost information, photos and stories as we can gather to be exhibited in the public domain to help the riders, the families of riders, the industry and social historians to see how the technology changed as new influences impacted on the motorcycle industry and associated sport. Back in 1913 a group of British Motorcycle enthusiasts backed by the British Motorcycle Industry set otu an event over 6 days in which riders had to navigate around a series of day long courses in a test not only about the abilities of the Rider to ride a motorbike but also for maintenance and to test the bikes reliability. This Blog / Website keenly follows the history of that event from this beginning…
