The Lancashire Lampkin’s and a charity ride Santander to Colne May 2016

The famous Lampkin dynasty of off-road stars will be known to nearly all readers of this blog, all of them famous far beyond their home in Yorkshire. The family also has connections over the border in Lancashire.

Graham Lampkin is one of the less well known Lancashire Lampkins and a regular classic bike long distance trailer and in 2014 undertook a ‘there & back’ ride to Lerwick in Shetland on a favourite BSA to raise funds for Cancer Research.

On 24 May 2016 he is planning to head to Santander in Northern Spain by ferry from Plymouth then will head back home in Colne via the Picos de Europa, Pais Vasco and Rioja then crossing the Pyrenees  heading up France to cross the channel in Brittany. As much of the route as he can do will be off surfaced highways. Rather than choosing the soft option of taking along one of those plush BMW or KTM adventure trail bikes, he’s decided to go a bit ‘off-grid’ by taking a 500cc Royal Enfield he rebuilt himself along with Chris Nutter on an ex-WD BSA B40.

ISDT 1953 – video of promotional movie discovered

Tags

, , ,

1953 was a great year for Great Britain in the ISDT, with one of its dream team line ups in the Trophy team who gave us our last win of the premier event award. A movie of the event was recently spotted on Youtube and is now added to our ISDT Tube feature of all known ISDT movie footage.

At an early stage of the ISDT 1953 we catch Rider #1 FH Whittle with his Panther 598cc sidecar [HYG 477] going through scrutineering. A nice view of British Trophy team member #237 Jack Stocker riding his 496cc Royal Enfield into Scrutineering #37 Olga Kevelos on the start line with her 150cc CZ. #71 PVK Baldwin with his 348 Matchless CC riding for the Sunbeam MCC comes in for fuel then later on again passing through a woodland swamp. #231 David S Tye of the Silver Vase team with his 497cc BSA [NON 496] The course includes checkpoints in Bratislava, open countryside and woodland with the usual ISDT throng of fans and curious local spectating at this festival of motorcycle action. The video finishes with coverage of the night stages and hopefully this is only part 1 and I can find the second part to add to this one.

I’ve been lagging with a number of articles needing posting but here I’ve now put up a short article on the ISDT 1953 winning 498cc AJS ridden by Hugh Viney which turned up in auction in 2015 after its long term owner passed away.

In the distance are the famous cliffs at Loggerheads, at that time a Tea Garden owned by Crosville Coaches who ran regular trips from Liverpool. The Tea Gardens featured in pre war ISDT event in Wales where they were the most northerly point and served as the venue for lunch stops. The petrol pumps have long gone and there is still a petrol garage in Loggerheads despite their demise in many areas of rural Wales.

Thanks to al those who made the trip to these web pages in 2015 and also contributed material and comments to the work so far. Although the stats show a lot of readers across the world out there, it is very nice when we get comment, feedback and corrections to show our audience is active.

ISDT 1968: Event daily check times and schedule sheets

I am often greatly indebted to Brian Catt who not only feeds me first hand memories of the great ISDT events in the 60’s and 70’s because…. ‘he was there’. His personal ISDT and Enduro knowledge is almost as vast as his library of photos and books. I was therefore very grateful when he passed me copies of the road time sheets for each day of this event along with the schedule options. I am sure these will prove to be very helpful to some readers.

These sheets set out the distances times and type of checks and where the feeling stops would be. The two columns on the extreme right gave optional schedules for the time for riders which would be set in the morning in accordance with prevailing weather and ground conditions.

Remembrance Sunday 2015: George Brown – Dispatch Rider

Another annual article leaves the ISDT to remember the incredible sacrifice made by so many to help stop a tyranny that would have changed the world as we know it now with many innocent people being exterminated because they did not fit into the ideal of a Fascist Empire in the making that was stopped dead in its tracks by the will of common men. I include two articles from the press this year covering the story of surviving DR’s Australian signaller and DR Bob Anson and British DR George Brown and here’s hoping they are with us for many years to come

“When I originally joined the Army,”Anson says, “I’d been a cattle drover in Bourke. We were trained at Ingleburn, NSW. As I’d been a horseman I was told to learn to ride a motor bike to get around as a signaller,” Anson says.

In the Australian ‘Newcastle Herald‘ on the 15th June 2015 Mike Scanlon reported on surviving Australian Bob Anson

PEOPLE say Bob Anson would joke that one day he’d get the 9mm German bullet embedded in his side removed to hang it on a necklace. He never did, so his potentially fatal lead souvenir is still lodged beneath ribs on the left hand side of his body.
