ISDT 1939: Germany’s Proposed Revision of the “International” Rules

Germany, ISDT, ISDT 1939, reliability, the Motor Cycle

In the frontispiece editorial in the 8th December 1938 issue of the Motor Cycle the article reproduced below indicates British concerns about proposals being made by Germany as hosts of the ISDT 1939 to revise a number of significant rules if the ’39 event. It  is interesting to note the part support and part objection to the prose abandonment of the final speed event in favour of a more typical test based on normal event conditions. Despite British reluctance the rule changes proposed by the Germans continues in the modern ISDE event with the final test now taking place on a motocross circuit. Having been able to watch a copy of a video of a film of the 1939 event, in my opinion the final test although not contested by British Riders was impressive in the manner in which riders with skills were able to make the bikes perform on quite radical off road conditions. I’d probably go as far as saying the introduction of the final test as one of cross country rather than speed may be one of the very few good things to come out of Germany at that time. It is also clear from the article of the existence of a widening gap between the founding principles of the event as a test of motorcycle reliability as followed in Britain and the European view of it being an off-road race for which reliability was one of a number of factors being tested.

“GERMANY is proposing a drastic revision of the rules under which the International Six Days Trial is run. This event, it will be recalled, is to be held in Germany from August 20th to August 27th with headquarters at Kitsbühel, Salzburg or, Berchtesgaden, and the idea is that instead of ending with a high-speed test there shall be a cross-country test. By incorporating this the character of the Six Days as a trial over difficult country would, it is suggested, be retained.

1973, ISDT, USA

The ISDT in 1973 took its first of many subsequent trips out of Europe for the first time.  This time to the USA which was beginning to be the place that the name Enduro was being coined for the sport and was in many way the driving force for a development of the sport as an extension of a wider enjoyment of riding natural off road terrain than as purely a discipline of Motor Sport as practised in Europe. With Trail Riding being a pastime enjoyed by many the wealth of America was driving a market seeking and expecting technology as getting better by the year.

Although unable to pull off the win of the Trophy the US team including ‘King Dick’ Burleson were able to use the home advantage to be sure of the win in the Silver Vase. Leading the Manufacturer’s award were Zundapp to be followed by three works Jawa teams from Czechoslovakia. Leading club team was Sweden’s SMK Eskjo with Sweden also taking 2nd and 3rd in this award.

2013, Carlisle, Centennial, ISDT, Lake District

It is truly fantastic that in a world where so quickly established technologies come and go. The old becomes lost in a haze of moribund redundancy for a while before it may again be cherished. Not only has an off road reliability trial motorcycling event of six days duration continued for 100 years despite the changes of fortune of the hardware as well as the impact of the world around it with increased legislative pressure and environmental protocols. It survives in a form that those original pioneers will not be that bewildered at what it looks like today. Also its history is cherished by enthusiastic followers and many of the early examples of machines are still treasured and the details of what happened are being recorded and saved to ensure the legends and stories are not lost to generations to come.

I was lucky to be pottering around the Lake District this weekend. This is the place the event started and where Jim and Dot Jones organised a splendid event incorporating the best of new and old to ensure the 100th anniversary of the first holding of the event was marked and commemorated with respect.

Below are a few photos I took when encountering many of the old bikes which looked splendid to all as they popped and chugged along the old lake road at Thirlmere as they approached the lunchtime stop in Keswick.Image

Here an old British classic chugs through a rock cutting as the old road that was created by Victorian Civil Engineers in order to establish Thirlmere to provide a clean water supply for the growing population of Manchester. A work that made a lasting mark on the landscape of the Lake District and later to provide much pleasure and joy to the public seeking recreation in the fresh air just as the historic road builders making the Mountain Tracks would do.

The following images come from the Thirlmere dam check point and any help identifying the persons involved would be welcome. Any images other people have taken will be linked to as we become aware of them.

hello and apologies for the recent poor abandonment of service, partly due to a rather hectic race season backed up by some good weather that could not be missed. What have I missed whilst I was missing.. well looks like issuu.com altered the embedding code they provide to embed their documents in wordpress blog pages which now work no longer so apologies I can’t embed the latest treasure uncovered from the wonderful world of eBay an original copy of the Motor Cycling Issue of the 5 October 1961 covering the first 3 days of the ISDT in Llandrindod Wells, Wales. I am now desperately seeking the next weeks issue.

This event was the last to venture into North Wales where it crossed the Berwyns from Llandrillo over the ancinet road more commonly known these days as the ‘Wayfarer’ named after the memorial at the summit of the pass dedicated to the memory of one of the great cycling journalists and part founder of the Rough Stuff Fellowship an organisation for off-road cycle touring.

On Monday August 18th 1913 one hundred and sixty riders set off from Carlisle to follow the route of the first day of the International Six Days Trial. The route description below is the one provided in the official programme accompanying the event which can now be viewed on this site in its full booklet form via our issuu.com library. More information can be found on the 1937 ISDT event page including detailed mapping from the programme of the actual route taken.

THE ROUTE OF THE 1937 INTERNATIONAL SIX DAYS’ TRIAL

COMPETITORS in the International Six Days’ Trial who took part when the Trial was previously held in Wales in 1933, will find the course this year fairly reminiscent of the earlier event, as a great many of the sections used in 1933 are again included. Indeed, it would have been impossible for the organisers to do otherwise in such an area, which, to those used to the space available on the Continent, must appear somewhat prescribed. Main roads with heavy traffic such as one encounters to the north and south, and in the coastal parts of Wales must be avoided, and, as far as possible, those small towns and villages, where” thirty mile per hour” limits exist have also been left severely alone. Briefly, the plan which appeared best to fit the conditions involves a series of five overlapping loops.

Latest news release has just landed

January Press release.

TOURATECH CENTENNIAL RALLY NEWS

Britain’s biggest rally event is set for August. What has been termed as the Festival of the International Six Days Enduro is in fact a celebration of the hundred year history of the ISDT/ISDE. It will be the most important event in the UK off road rally calendar in 2013.

Touratech the World’s largest manufacturer of Adventure Touring equipment is backing the event and will be present at the Carlisle start and finish area.

The first ISDT, later changed to the ISDE, was held in Carlisle in August 1913, one hundred years later Carlisle welcomes rally competitors to the city centre start area for a four day event. There will be a three day forestry rally in the Kielder & Kershope forests with each day starting and finishing at Carlisle Castle. A celebration programme is being produced by Carlisle City Council which has recognised the importance of this event.

On the last day, which is exactly the same day of the month as the first day of the first ISDT, one hundred riders will ride the same course as the original first day. The Centennial Ride competitors will have lunch at Keswick where the old timers dined.

The Centennial Rally has classes for adventure, genuine trail, sports and classic ISDT/E type bikes. The course will be three days of forestry tracks, two days of which will be three laps of a challenging course, the other day will be a single one hundred mile lap, the longest rally lap in Britain. Total distance is around four hundred miles.

The Centennial Ride which follows the original one hundred and twenty mile gravel roads, now surfaced, will include machines and riders that have a connection with the history of the ISDT/E.

No celebration of this type would be complete without a get together and this will take place on the Saturday evening at the Swallow Lynton Hotel, where bargain price accommodation is available, the hotel is a short distance from the start and finish area.

There will be plenty to see near the start and finish arch where manufacturers and traders will have displays of their latest products. Further information is available at www.bigbikerallychallenge.co.uk where the regulations and entry form will shortly be posted. Go to touratechuk.co.uk for information or to request a catalogue.
